It is a heat and drought tolerant plant that thrives in nutrient-poor soils with thick clay layers and intermittent moisture. The fruit is a capsule up to 20 cm long, contains many seeds, contains many vitamins, trace mineral elements and is a rich source of fiber. This plant is also very easy to grow and you can completely grow it at home. Below, Kim's Garden would like to share "How to grow okra" for many fruits.

1. Climatic conditions for growing okra
Okra is a warm-weather plant that needs full sun exposure. It grows best in the temperature range of 24-27°C. It has good tolerance to high temperatures and drought conditions. But very sensitive to frost and temperatures below 12 °C.
Seeds germinate poorly at temperatures below 20 °C.. Plants can grow during the whole rainy season. In Vietnam, Okra is usually planted in late spring and early summer.
2. Choose a variety of okra
There are different varieties of okra with a variety of fruit shapes and sizes. Some types include Heirloom Burgundy, Clemson Spineless, Blondy, etc. In Vietnam, okra with dark green skin with few thorns, slightly curved is grown popularly, for quick harvest usually only after 55 to 60 years. day.
Seeds are sold at nurseries or if you grow little you can buy seedlings on e-commerce platforms like shopee, lazada, tiki.
3. Prepare the land for okra planting
Okra can be grown in a variety of soils, however, it grows best in loose, well-drained sandy loam soils rich in organic matter. A pH range of 6.0-6.8 is considered optimal. Acidic, saline and poorly drained soils are not good for this plant.
If you don't have a garden or a large space, you can grow okra in a Styrofoam container or pot. But require styrofoam containers, this pot has a width of at least 50cm, a height of about 50cm or more. And always remember to punch drainage holes in the bottom and around.
4. How to grow corn heads
a. Growing okra with corn kernels
Soak the seeds for about 2-3 hours in warm water of 40 degrees Celsius. Soak the seeds before sowing for better germination rate.
– Incubate the seeds in a damp towel immediately after soaking the seeds. Regularly water the seeds until the seeds crack, then they are sown in the planting tray.
– Tilling the soil by plowing, weeding, raising beds, and at the same time mixing inorganic fertilizers in the soil to ensure adequate nutrition for plants.
– Dig each hole in the soil, sow 2-3 seeds in each hole and then cover it with a thin layer of soil about 1cm. Then use a light spray to keep the soil moist. When the seedlings have grown, prune only the strongest one. Plants are spaced 70x40cm apart.
b. Growing okra with seedlings
Seeds are incubated as seedlings in the tray first so that the seedlings have a higher survival rate. We perform seed incubation in soil trays, lightly watered every day so that after about 2-3 days, the seeds will germinate. About 7-10 days later, the seedlings will reach a height of about 5-10cm.
When the plant reaches a height of 20 cm, start moving the plant to the garden or pot.
Note: Before planting, it is necessary to apply a little inorganic fertilizer underneath the stripped soil. After planting, water the plants to make them take root quickly.
4. How to take care of okra plants
Watering: 2 times a day for plants in the early morning and evening. Soil moisture is always kept in the range of 80-85% for the best growth and development.
Top dressing: There are 3 times of fertilizing plants:
– Phase 1: Fertilize with urea and potassium fertilizer mixed with water and water the stump when the tree has 2 true leaves. On average, for every 1000m2, use 5kg of urea and 3kg of potassium.
– Phase 2: Fertilize when the plant has 5 true leaves. Apply the same fertilizer as phase 1.
– Phase 3: Fertilize when the plants flower, apply a mixture of 7kg of urea and 5kg of potassium mixed well/1000m2. Fertilize between the two rows according to the holes to cover the manure and then water enough to make the fertilizer dissolve.
5. Harvesting okra plants
Okra produces fruit after about 50-60 days of planting, from the time of flowering 7-8 days later, it can be harvested.
